Your lens options

Choose a lens that fits the way you live

A lens implant is a clear artificial lens that replaces your eye's natural lens, most often during cataract surgery. You have options. Here is how they compare.

  • Generally covered by insurance

    Standard lens

Clear vision focused at one distance, usually far away. Most people still wear glasses for reading and close-up tasks.

  • Premium upgrade

    Astigmatism-correcting (toric) lens

Designed to correct astigmatism at the same time your lens is replaced, which may sharpen distance vision and reduce your reliance on glasses.

  • Premium upgrade

    Multifocal lens

Designed to focus at near, middle and far distances, which may mean reaching for glasses less often when reading, using a phone or driving. Some people notice halos or glare around lights at night.

Premium lenses are an upgrade with an additional out-of-pocket cost that insurance does not cover. Not everyone is a candidate, and results vary from person to person. No lens can promise glasses-free vision. We'll review your options and pricing with you before anything is scheduled.

Refractive lens exchange

No cataract yet? Ask about refractive lens exchange.

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) uses the same kind of lens implant as cataract surgery, for some adults who want to depend less on glasses before a cataract forms.

  • How it works

Your surgeon replaces your eye's natural lens with a lens implant chosen for your vision, such as a multifocal or toric lens.

  • Who it may suit

Adults tired of glasses or contacts for near and far, especially those who find reading glasses creeping into daily life. Not everyone is a candidate.

  • What it costs

RLE is an elective procedure, so it is usually not covered by insurance. We explain the full cost at your consultation, before you decide.

Cost and coverage

What does a lens implant cost?

It depends on the lens you choose and whether you also need cataract surgery. Here is how it usually works. Our team gives you clear pricing before anything is scheduled.

  • Standard lens: generally covered

When you need cataract surgery, Medicare generally covers it with a standard lens implant. Your plan's usual deductible and coinsurance may apply.

  • Premium lens: an extra cost

Multifocal and toric lenses are upgrades. Insurance does not cover the upgrade, so there is an additional out-of-pocket cost. We go over it with you first.

  • Start with a consultation

Tell us your insurance when you book and we confirm your coverage before your visit. No insurance? A comprehensive eye exam is $270 self-pay.

Do I have to leave Charlotte County for a premium lens?

No. Harborside Eye Specialists offers multifocal and astigmatism-correcting (toric) lens implants in Port Charlotte. Your consultation, lens planning and follow-up visits are all handled by our board-certified ophthalmologists.

What is the difference between a standard and a premium lens?

A standard lens focuses at one distance, usually far, so most people still wear glasses for reading. A toric lens is designed to correct astigmatism. A multifocal lens is designed to focus at near, middle and far distances. Your surgeon will explain which suit your eyes.

How much do premium lenses cost? Does Medicare pay?

When you need cataract surgery, Medicare generally covers it with a standard lens. A premium lens is an upgrade with an additional out-of-pocket cost that insurance does not cover. Refractive lens exchange is elective and usually not covered. We give you clear pricing before anything is scheduled.

Will I be able to see without glasses?

Premium lenses are designed to reduce how often you need glasses. Results vary, though, and no lens can promise glasses-free vision. Some people still use glasses for certain tasks, and multifocal lenses can cause halos or glare around lights at night. Your surgeon will help you set realistic expectations.

Am I a candidate for a premium lens?

Not everyone is. Your eye health, measurements and daily needs all play a part. Your surgeon checks these at your consultation and will tell you honestly if a standard lens is the better choice.

What is refractive lens exchange (RLE)?

RLE replaces your natural lens with a lens implant before a cataract forms, for some adults who want to depend less on glasses. It is the same kind of lens used in cataract surgery. It is elective, so it is usually not covered by insurance.

What insurance do you accept?

We accept Medicare and select Medicare Advantage PPO and commercial PPO plans, including Cigna PPO, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and TRICARE. We are an out-of-network provider for AARP, Aetna and Humana Medicare PPO plans. We don't accept HMO plans or vision plans. If your plan isn't listed in the form, a comprehensive eye exam is $270 self-pay.

What should I bring to my consultation?

Your insurance cards, photo ID, a list of medications, your current glasses or contacts and sunglasses. Your eyes will likely be dilated, so please arrange a driver. Plan on 1 to 2 hours.

Do you have Spanish-speaking staff?

Sí. Dr. Solano habla español con fluidez. Llámenos al (941) 624-4500 para hacer su cita.
